Toxic fumes in Australia

But what exactly is in the smoke? Which mask to choose?

A look back at critical air pollution in Sydney and New South Wales

Since the beginning of the week, the Blue Mountains are burning in Australia.

A state of emergency has just been declared by the government due to the extreme heat recorded yesterday and the alerts of the entire medical profession regarding air pollution that is very dangerous to health. The emergency room has recorded an increase in attendance for respiratory problems of 80% since Tuesday.

But how are these fumes toxic?

Smoke is generated by the combustion of fossil fuels, in this case wood. In contact with fire and oxygen, the elements are transformed to create a mixture of gases and fine particles, mainly PM2.5 .

These microscopic particles are present in very large quantities in the air and once inhaled, they become lodged in the lungs creating inflammation or worse. Because of their size, they can even pass through the blood vessels and leave the lungs to disperse in the body where they are not expected, in the brain or muscles for example.

The body does not know how to eliminate them, so they remain for life in the organism and disturb its functioning to a greater or lesser extent depending on their quantity and the sensitivity of the person.

It is for these reasons that chimneys and cooking fumes are harmful and strongly degrade the quality of your indoor air which is (when there is no fire) 10 times more polluted than the outside air!

But this will be the subject of another article!

Which mask is effective against these fumes?

In order for a mask to be effective against these microscopic elements, it must fit perfectly to your face and fill in any possible "face leaks" AND use an effective filter against fine particles.
